Imagining a Future by Recovering Our Past

Thomas Pickering

Project description

Throughout London, there are over 400 vacant public buildings, many of which sit on the Historic England Heritage at Risk Register with no current viable future plans. These spaces sit dormant whilst land costs spiral and a need for low to middle income housing grows year on year, all while our current housing model is almost entirely led by private developments, directing the primary incentives on profits ahead of people or place.

“Imagining a Future by Recovering Our Past” explores how the retention and restoration of London’s “At Risk” Heritage buildings could form a network of community lead housing schemes. This project, through the use of the Haggerston Baths site, aims to demonstrate how the original unique design of these spaces offer the opportunity for varied housing schemes that respond to these heritage characteristics, creating a collective housing model, tailored to the individual and site.
