Project description

This project is a response that brings together research around three specific societal issues: the rising expense of childcare means that for 76% of women it does not make financial sense to be in employment; 1.5million elder people in the UK are “often lonely”; and, intergenerational cultural practices like Omugwo in Nigeria are pillars which relieve similar pressures, allowing each generation to be supported by the others. However the UK does not make the same priorities for these kinds of social support systems.

The thesis asks how can architecture better facilitate intergenerational cultural and social support practices amongst Black communities in Hackney Marshes? Provision of work space, childcare, and housing within a single building fosters a sense of familiarity, interdependency and support, with a programme and visual identity which encourages positive associations of Black Culture. The building is designed to have a tectonic and programmatic permanence and enable cultural celebration.
