Fragmented Artscape

Rana Al-kolaibi

Project description

Art reflects the cultural heritage and identity of a community. By celebrating and preserving cultural traditions through artistic expression, residents of Hackney can achieve a clear sense of pride and belonging which contributes to greater cultural resilience so frequently challenged by competing social, political and economic pressures. The project seeks to integrate private and public spaces for artists, community and the general public in the heart of Dalston, Hackney. A set of architectural interventions that boldly and sometimes politely borrow existing building stock establishes cultural nodal points, strategically located to catalyse social interaction, creative collaboration, and cultural exchange. The design explores the impact that both small-scale and large-scale architectural decisions can exert on the physical, social, and cultural dynamics of urban spaces.
