Project description
Over the last decade, the adult and creative arts education sectors have faced continuous economic cuts in favour of sectors that are considered to be more economically important. Lack of awareness of programs geared towards creatives and adult learners does not help to turn this around. Eastway Island is a masterplan for a collection of creative production and education facilities in Hackney Wick. This project provides spaces and a place to support local creatives/makers/artists through an exchange economy of resources for time and expertise, to deliver adult education opportunities in the creative arts to local residents/adult learners in Hackney. The masterplan is comprised of three buildings: a new build Depot building for production, reuse of an existing structure for artist live/work/display, and renovation and reuse of a 1930s baths as a theatre. The architectural strategy is driven by a desire for increased visual and physical access in a manner that highlights the behaviours, activities and performances of all who occupy the buildings and runs through the planning from internal ambulatory link space to large rotating walls/doors to transform size, scale and atmospheres across a 24 hour period.
