Drawing on the City

Ella Daley

Project description

For too long, large-scale developments have prioritised economic gains at the cost of local communities, becoming synonymous with the disillusion of local communities and the displacement of their constituents and culture. Design should be responsive to our changing world, with the Architect released from being the ‘hero’, instead acting as a facilitator who empowers communities, planners and developers.
‘Drawing on the city’ proposes a new methodology which invites openness and uncertainty into the design process, to ensure that new large-scale developments cultivate and build upon existing culture. In this project, dynamic drawing methods encourage smudging, erasing and redrawing, allowing for an intertwining of representation tools and site, to provide a framework of urban conditions, coupled with policy integration at local authority level.
