A Municipal Dream

Amelia Brown

Project description

Changes in the social needs of communities, and poor investment in maintenance of built fabric has led to many of Hackney’s post-war estates to be deemed as unfit for purpose even though they remain occupied. Housing conceived under the post-war, socio-democratic dream is reconsidered by A Municipal Dream, a project that invites an enduring and reciprocal way of living in and stewarding homes to reactivate the city commons, inspiring a new and lasting commitment to the longevity and integrity of the estates and their communities. The Beckers Estate is used as a test site for a culture and system of care and repair, as both a remedial and preventative method of estate renewal, including the design of a series and sequencing of new residency spaces, workshops and common rooms.
