Fluid Lands

Alexandra Hopkins

Project description

Humans use geology to dictate the location of cities, categorising matter to establish systems of land value and ownership, asserting dominion over nature and a destructive entanglement of land and extraction – all practices that have contributed to the climate crisis. One consequence for London is the threat of flooding due to rising sea levels and the city needs an urgent adaptive strategy. This project draws attention to the intrinsic relationship between anthropocentric land attitudes and destructive practice by proposing a radical acceptance of water as a means to redefine urban living and a move towards nature-based solutions. Edges of the River Thames cede space back to nature, and increase river capacity. A floating and flexible system offers a new model for living that is untethered from traditional property logics. Home becomes a shared domestic space and the view back to the river’s edge is a reminder of the changing climate and nature’s movements.
