Breaking Down Fences

Alexandra Bobirnac

Project description

The project is a community initiative aimed at combating the impact of urban loneliness and encouraging cultural integration in London by improving the energy efficiency of the typical terraced house. The initiative asks residents to willingly give 3.7m width of their back garden for an agreed time to create, with their neighbours, a shared space that benefits all. By using permitted development and party wall agreements that shape the rules of the design, an open floor plan is provided with storage spaces between the structural frames creating a flexible floor for coming together to host collective activities.

The intervention, being a self-build project, enables people to come together and gradually form a sense of trust. It facilitates various social interactions, allowing them to build bonds by understanding that there is a supportive community to rely on.

The space is designed with an open floor plan to allow for flexibility when hosting various activities. Folding curtain walls can divide the space as needed, enabling multiple activities to occur simultaneously.

The intervention’s design allows for flexible use beyond its intended purpose. Residents can partition the space, personalise wall finishes, and explore various functionalities, tailoring the environment to their needs and preferences, reflecting their collective identity and values.
