Freedom of Movement

Jack Morgan

Project description
Freedom of Movement is a speculative proposal responding to the chronic lack of publicly accessible active infrastructure in Dalston, which along with the neighbouring wards of Shacklewell and Hackney Central, currently has no significant public green space or active infrastructure.

The proposal seeks to activate underutilised rooftop spaces, creating new green areas, promoting purposeful semi-formal and informal physical activity and improving the health and wellbeing of local people. Connecting these occupied rooftops could provide a new way of traversing the city, away from the congested and polluted streets below. The Kingsland Shopping Centre rooftop playing field is a prototype for a system that could be rolled out across London, creating new active and green spaces in dense urban areas across the city.

Site location
Kingsland Shopping Centre, Dalston, Hackney
