Project description
How can rural spatial features be translated into an urban architectural strategy to address childhood nature deficiency and freedom to explore?
The School with Roots aims to restore children’s place in the city as explorers, learners and citizens, nurturing a symbiosis between state-run primary education and elderly social care within a neighbourhood pedestrian strategy. In this ‘school-with-care’, space is exchanged between national curriculum teaching, state social care and lifelong learning programmes to create a more fulfilling and nature-immersed experience for young and old.
The ambiguous folly typology inspired the design approach, which envisages the School With Roots as a landscape to explore, obscuring and revealing views and choreographing overlapping routes between learning spaces.
