Project description
In Hackney, less than half of children reach the amount of movement recommended by the NHS. The Stamford Hill Leisure Trust, set up by residents of Stamford Hill, aims to combat this by implementing an ‘Active City’ in their neighbourhood. The ‘Active City’ interrogates the leisure centre typology, unfolding its contents and dispersing it across the neighbourhood, creating an unfolded landscape of movement and play.
The project starts with a small-scale play route, encouraging active play while travelling from A to B. Secondly, it improves an existing MUGA (Multi-Use Games Area) to increase its accessibility and use. Finally, it implements a large-scale scheme on a vacant site, incorporating a swimming pool and GP surgery in a new landscaped public square.
