Elliot Bennett: Productive Living

Folio

A mid-scale carbon-negative housing development in Haggerston Park will increase food self-sufficiency in Hackney

Goal & objective
A mid-scale carbon-negative housing development in Haggerston Park. As well as testing a passive, carbon-negative housing typology, Productive Living will increase food self-sufficiency in Hackney. A significant shift is needed to combat the climate crisis at the district scale of consumption, the living scale of productive and passive design, and the material scale of conscious material selection championing bio-based materials.

Strategy
A carbon-negative housing typology achieving 30 per cent food self-sufficiency through productive windows, terraces, bridges and vertical growing towers. Promoting circular consumption, the Productive Living typology maximises passive strategies and adjacency to Hackney City Farm via rainwater collection, solar energy, an anaerobic digester and natural ventilation.

Impact
A self-sustaining carbon-negative community of climate awareness, developed for an example of holistic urban living. Creating a culture in the city which is healthy, resilient, adaptable and aware.
